He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” Mark 8:24
They say that perfect sight is 20/20 vision. Everybody would love to have that, but some of us need glasses to correct our vision, even if it’s just for reading. Some have surgery such a Lasik to correct their eyesight, others wear contact lenses. Good eyesight is an amazing blessing that we often take for granted. My Mom, over the years, has progressively lost her eyesight due to a detached retina that couldn’t be repaired. Now she sees shadows or forms of people but cannot distinguish features. Some people are totally blind due to various causes that doctors can’t help.
Far more important however, is our spiritual eyesight. Jesus, disgusted with the Pharisees over an argument they were having, said to them, “Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? (Mark 8:18). All people’s spiritual vision is poor by nature. We can’t tell the difference between “people” and “trees,” as mentioned in our verse above. Some things that almost everyone “saw” as wrong in the past, many people today “can’t see” anything wrong with them at all. We need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we may correctly discern the will of God.
Once we have new life in Christ and our vision is restored, it is still possible to lose our perfect spiritual vision. The believers in Laodicea thought they were rich and didn’t need anything, but Jesus said they were wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. But Jesus has the remedy. Jesus said to them, I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see (Revelation 3:17-18).
As in everything, Jesus is the answer. He is the source. There’s no reason that we need to go around not able to see things clearly. Like the man in Mark 8, Jesus will touch us again to completely restore our spiritual eyesight if we ask Him in true faith. He’s able to cure all kinds of vision problems. Let’s not be satisfied with anything less than 20/20 spiritual vision.
