“The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” Psalm 121:8
I would encourage you to read Psalm 121. What an amazing reminder of God’s watch-care over us always, even when we aren’t aware of it.
I read about a mother, Joyce Halvorson, when her oldest son was in first grade, she’d get him ready for school each morning, then read Psalm 121 before he went out the door. She did this for an entire month, and in this way he memorized the psalm for himself.
What a great psalm to memorize! Here’s a “free-handed” paraphrase that I came across that turns this Psalm into a prayer:
When I look up at the majestic mountains You made, I know where to find all the help I need. It comes from You, Maker of heaven and earth. You will not let my foot slide down wrong paths. You stay awake all the time watching over my steps. You never sleep.
You are my Keeper, providing refreshment and keeping me safe day and night. You guard me from all evil, and Your protection is round-the-clock. You keep my soul safe, watching with divine care over me everywhere I travel and every time I come and go.
What an amazing truth to be reminded of on a daily basis!
Matthew Henry, the Bible commentator once wrote: “We are exposed to danger more than we are aware of, and this Psalm directs and encourages us to repose ourselves and our confidence in God.”
